Maureen O'Shay Photography » Katy's Family Lifestyle Portrait Photographer

There is something so special about being invited into someone’s hospital room hours after mom had a baby. Whether you are a friend or family member, you can really feel the joy in the room – as cheesy as that may sound. How lucky am I that my job takes me to the happiest place on earth (sorry, Disney, the Labor and Delivery unit wins today!).

On Father’s Day, I photographed Kate and Oscar and their new baby boy. He joins is parents and big brother and sister, too. This newly created Party of Five was as sweet as can be. I love, love, love these sessions and appreciate families trusting me with these, the most precious first, moments together.

Kate answers a few questions and lets you know what a “Fresh 48” session with me is all about.

Please tell me about your session experience:

Our “Fresh 48” photo session was such a special experience! Maureen was so easy and fun to work with and made the entire session fun and memorable. She was prompt, prepared, and extremely flexible with whatever we threw at her. I highly recommend this sweet intimate photo session to remember these special moments with your new baby!

Tell us a little bit about your family
My husband and I have a 5 year old boy, 3 year old girl and our newest addition, a little boy.

What made you decide it was the time to do a photo session? Were you marking any special occasion?
We wanted to capture this special time adding a new addition to our family. I loved seeing how my older two children interacted with their new sibling.  Also having some special intimate photos with our newborn without the distractions of life at home!

Where was your session held and why?
At the hospital 24 hours after having our son.

What did you like about your location?
It captured real life moments in a documentary style. The photos were natural and not forced helping us remember this special time.

What did you like about your session? What was your favorite part?
I loved how sweet and natural the photos were. It wasn’t forced or posed and helped me to remember these special moments.

Any funny stories or interesting happenings during your session?
My middle child, 3 yr old daughter, had to be coaxed to sit by her new brother with a chocolate chip cookie:)

These pictures from June’s PBK event are GORGEOUS! Let their mother Erin tell you all about the experience!

Please tell me about your session experience:

Maureen was extremely easy to work with! During past sessions with other photographers, I have left feeling stressed and like there was no chance that there would be any good pictures that would come out of our session. Maureen’s session with us was very easy going and my kids had fun while getting their pictures taken. She worked with them in a playful way and went with what they were doing to get perfect shots.

What made you decide it was the time to do a photo session? Were you marking any special occasion?

I loved the promotion Maureen was doing with PBK and loved the location. The concept of a mini session worked well for my family because it offered a session but I knew it would be short! Father’s day was coming up and this session fit in perfectly!

What did you like about your location?
PBK had beautiful backdrops, it was air conditioned, it was kid friendly! I loved that when I asked for a particular bedding set as a backdrop, she made it happen!

What did you like about your session? What was your favorite part?
I loved how easy it felt. Not focusing on posing shots made it go really smoothly and I love the feel of the pictures once we got them.

Any funny stories or interesting happenings during your session?
My daughter insisted on carrying a wipe with her throughout the session. Maureen was open to this and was able to crop it out of pictures to get great shots!

Having fun! Being silly! Those EYES!“Maybe she won’t notice me here?”

One of the best part of my job is meeting new families. When I met Andrea and John and their kids, it didn’t take long for me to see the fun-loving family they are – silly, real, down-to-earth, and just plain awesome people. All of them (yes, even the kids) are involved in our school, our community and genuinely care about our community. We are lucky to have them here in Katy!

I had a great time at the session – but don’t take my word for it. Here is mom Andrea’s perspective:

Please tell me about your session experience:
What an awesome experience. Love that Maureen took time ahead of time to figure out what we like in photo shoot. Photos are beautiful and even when posed, they look natural. Even the outtakes are precious to me because they captured a moment in time that was real and beautiful.

What did you like about your session? What was your favorite part?
It was just easy and we got so many beautiful photos!

Any funny stories or interesting happenings during your session?
Kids had fun drawing with chalk and some of our favorite photos are the ones where my littlest hooligan could show her silly side and her distaste for photo sessions.

What do you hope your kids/family will say years down the road when looking at these images?
I just hope they have memories of this stage in our lives. I often don’t want to be in photos because I am too self conscious. Photo shoots allow me to look and feel pretty enough to keep and share the photos, which I hope my kids will treasure in the years to come

Any advice to other families before their photo session?
Fill out the questionnaire ahead of time to give a feel for what you want/expect. Then let her work her magic.

LOVE, love love feedback! Thanks Andrea, John and kids! To see my favorite photo from the session, go HERE.

Every month I photograph the cover family for the The Cinco Spirit. These cover families have been pre-selected by members of the HOA. A few days before the print deadline, our original May cover family had to cancel. After a momentary panic attack over the looming deadline, I reach out to my friend Kelly and hoped they were available, like, in 2 days (totally doable, right?). Luckily, Kelly and her husband Eric and their two adorable daughters were able to make time one Friday night (they were actually leaving for spring break the very next day – so props for getting adorable outfits ready for a photos session on top of all the packing that has to be done).

As a photographer, I strive for authentic family photos for my clients. If I had to choose one word to describe this session it would be FUN (which, if you know them, this comes as no surprise). We really did have a good time – I broke out all my silly jokes and tricks to get the kids to relax and have fun and the rest naturally unfolded from there. I love, love, love the family connections I captured here. So real and so them.

Thanks again, Herrera Family, for helping out the magazine and being such a fun family to work with! I hope you treasure your photos for a lifetime!
